Valencia Las Fallas Festival (24 Hours)

Home » Tours Examples » Valencia Las Fallas

If you love the smell of gunpowder and the sight of flames, then the Las Fallas is for you. This unique Valencian is world-famous for its being smoky, flamboyant, wild, and unruly – literally setting the beautiful city ablaze. The origins of this colorful festival are quite unclear, although they are believed to have evolved from pagan ceremonies and celebrations held on the onset of spring and planting season.

Highlights of Las falls include are the creation and then destruction of ninots or statues made of wood, plaster, and huge cardboard. The lifelike Ninots are set in more than 350 sites such as major intersections and parks all over Valencia.

These statues often satirically depict current events as well as vulgar scenes. Lampooning corrupt politicians and Spanish celebrities are definitely crowd pleasers. Made by neighborhood organizations, the ninots are quite costly and take around six months to complete. Many crafters even need cranes to move the statues (some are a few stories high) into position.
